Why clean your wall-mounted air conditioner?

Many people forget to have their wall-mounted air conditioner cleaned every two years. However, this oversight can have several consequences for both your health and the proper functioning of the unit. For example:

  • Poor air quality : When the filter is clogged with dust, allergens, bacteria, and dust mites, your respiratory system can be affected. This unhealthy air can aggravate asthma or allergies.
  • Reduced performance : A dirty air conditioner doesn’t just pollute the air—it also performs poorly. If the filter is covered in grime, air cannot circulate properly, which means less cool air enters your home. The same applies to the coils: if they are dirty, heat transfer becomes inefficient. The system has to work harder, overheats unnecessarily, and consumes more energy for less cooling power.
  • Increased electricity consumption : When the wall-mounted air conditioner has been running for several months and is filled with thick dust, the system must work harder to maintain the desired temperature. This extra effort leads to higher energy use, which is unfortunate since wall-mounted heat pumps are generally the most economical type of air conditioning system.
  • Risk of coil freezing : If cool air doesn’t circulate properly because of accumulated dust, the evaporator coil may freeze due to excessive cooling. This ice buildup can damage the air conditioner and reduce its overall performance.
  • Shorter lifespan : A wall-mounted air conditioner that hasn’t been cleaned for several years will eventually suffer irreversible damage. Dirt, dust, and grease affect the internal components, leading to breakdowns and a shorter service life.
  • Fire hazard in ventilation circuits : If the system overheats because the motor is overworked due to a clogged filter or dirty coils, the accumulated debris may become flammable.

When should you have your unit cleaned?

Your air conditioner should be cleaned every two years, especially if you notice any of the following signs:

A strange odor when you turn it on (such as a musty or moldy smell);

Less airflow or air that isn’t as cool as usual;

New noises (clicking, light humming, etc.);

You feel more congested, have a scratchy throat, or experience unusual sneezing when at home.

How to clean your wall-mounted air conditioner

You can clean your wall-mounted heat pump filters yourself every month. This allows air to circulate more freely—without dust or bacteria. However, a full professional cleaning should be performed every two years.

During the cleaning, a Climatik technician will clean the coils, evaporator, fan, drain, and ducts to remove greasy dust deposits. The filter will also be cleaned and replaced if necessary.

The outdoor unit of your wall-mounted heat pump will be cleaned as well (the condenser will be degreased and washed), and the voltage, drain, and refrigerant pressure will all be checked.

It’s important to note that a complete air conditioner cleaning requires specialized tools and proper technical training.
