How often should you clean your heat pump?

How often should a heat pump really be cleaned? It’s a question we’re often asked at Climatik.

It’s important to know that a maintenance service every two years for your heat pump—whether central or wall-mounted—is recommended. This may surprise many people who believe these systems can operate properly for years without cleaning or inspection.

Just because your unit seems to be running fine doesn’t mean you should skip preventive maintenance. Neglecting cleaning and inspection can harm its performance and even lead to breakdowns or serious malfunctions.

Premature wear on your heat pump

Heat pumps operate year-round, both in summer and winter. Air constantly circulates through the system—across the coils, filter, and condenser.

Over time, dust and grease build up, along with humidity, bacteria, and allergens. The dirtier the system gets, the harder it has to work to deliver the same heating or cooling results.

You can clean the filter yourself every month, but a full, deep cleaning every two years is essential (preferably before heating season or before the summer heat, depending on how you use your system).

This cleaning includes several steps: cleaning or replacing filters, washing the coils (both indoor and outdoor units), inspecting the motor and fan, and checking the drain line, which can easily become blocked.

A complete system test should also be performed by our technician. Even if no obvious problems are visible, this type of maintenance keeps your heat pump operating efficiently—and helps you avoid unpleasant surprises in the middle of January or during a heat wave.

It all depends on how you use it

A family with pets that uses a central heat pump for both heating and cooling will need more frequent maintenance than a couple who only occasionally uses a wall-mounted air conditioner.

Here are a few situations where more frequent cleaning is recommended:

  • If you have pets (hair and dust quickly accumulate in the filters);
  • If you cook often without a strong range hood (grease particles can stick to the indoor unit);
  • If your heat pump runs almost continuously, year-round;
  • If you live in a dusty area or near a forest (pollen can also clog the filters).
  • In these cases, annual cleaning is definitely a good idea.

What you can do

You don’t need to call a technician for everything. You can clean the filters every 4 to 6 weeks (if the unit is used frequently, simply remove them and rinse gently with lukewarm water) and check the outdoor unit from time to time—remove leaves, branches, and dust, for example. It needs to be able to “breathe.”

Signs that cleaning is urgent

Here are some signs that your heat pump needs maintenance:

  • The air being blown is less hot or less cold than before;
  • A strange smell comes from the unit, especially when it starts up;
  • Unusual mechanical noises can be heard;
  • An increase in your electricity bill without any change in usage;
  • Condensation or water dripping from the indoor unit;
  • Decreased performance.
  • In these cases, it’s best not to wait. Our technician can perform a thorough cleaning and ensure that no parts are damaged.
